RUSSIAN EXPEDITION TO EVEREST
DARJEELING REPORT OF PREPARATIONS
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, Mav 30. “A Russian expedition is reported to be getting ready for an assault on Mount Everest,” says the Darjeeling correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” “The climbers are said to be in training in the Pamirs and the Caucasus.
“The Russian press recently claimed that Soviet alpinists had devised a new technique and new equipment. “The assault on Everest mav not be without political significance, it would be a clear sign of Russia’s renewed interest in the Tibetan area. The Indian Government has said that it will extend to the Russian expedition the same facilities as those afforded in the past to climbers from other countries.”
