SERVICE BY RADIO STATION
MAYOR OF GREYMOUTH’S APPRECIATION From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, May 29. In appreciation of the service given by station 3YZ. Greymouth, during the floods, especially on Friday night when a continuous service was maintained, the Mayor of Greymouth (Mr F. F. Boustridge) to-day sent the following telegram to the Director of Eroacasting (Mr W. Yates): “I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the staff of 3YZ for their action in remaining continuously on duty during the recent floods. The assistance and advice given to the residents of Greymouth and district were very much appreciated and served to alleviate a great deal of worry for all affected.” WORK ON BANKS OF WAIMAKARIRI BREACHES FILLED IN The results of the flood in the Waimakariri river would have been disastrous if the breaches in the stopbanks had occurred further upstream, said the Chief Engineer to the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr H. W. Harris) yesterday. The stopbanks had proved very effective and had prevented more serious damage. Mr Harris, who, with his staff, was working on the damaged banks all day yesterday, said that the three main breaches had been filled in with sandbags above the water level. Householders in the Stewart’s Gully and 'Coutts Island area, where the Waimakariri river burst its bank near th£ traffic bridge on the Main North road, took stock of the damage to their homes yesterday. Three houses on Coutts Island were still surrounded by a diminishing sheet of water yesterday morning. Carpets and furniture in some houses and baches were covered with mud.
