RUMANIANS IN U.S.

RESTRICTIONS PUT ON DIPLOMATS RETALIATORY ACTION TAKEN (Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 26. The United States to-day imposed tight restrictions on the movement of Rumanian diplomats in the United States. The move was in retaliation for actions taken against the American Legation in Bucharest by Rumania’s Communist Government. Announcing the step, the Undersecretary of State (Mr James Webb) said that Rumania had been informed that the United States would reduce its official staff in Bucharest in accordance with the Rumanian demand and the staff be cut to 10 persons. The restrictions limit the movement of Rumanian officials to within 35 miles of the borders of the District of Columbia, in which Washington is situated. They must obtain a special permit from the State Department tefore travelling beyond these limits. Mr Webb said that the State Department might impose similar bans on other Eastern European countries, but it did not plan at present to apply such restrictions to the Soviet Union.
