CULTURAL SOCIETY

Mr P. Stanley Foster was the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Cultural Society, held in Begg's concert hall on Saturday night. His sublect was “Fi<ty Years’ Progress in Medicine and Surgery,” and he | gave a most interesting account of what he described as the amazing a ivances made in medical science since the beginning of the 20th century. A musical programme was presented bv Mrs Alison Cordery, who. with Mr W. Trussell as accompanist, sang three songs by Benjamin Britten. Miss Zena Johnson, who played Grieg’s Ballade in G Minor, and Mr Grahaeme Johnson. who sang three songs—one by Handel, one by Puree'l and another by Buononcini. Mrs AVil! Hutchens accompanied Mr Johnson’s sores. ' A letter from Si’- James Shelley, for many years president of the soc ety. and now, residing in England, was read. He thanked members for their congratulations upon the honour of knighthood conferred on him. and expressed great pleasure at hearing that the society was so active. At the meeting the president 'Professor G. Jobberns) presided, and there was an excellent attendance. M. Conolly thanked Mr Foster and the musicians.
