MINOR EVENTS AT ADDINGTON

ARTLESS IMPRESSIVE Artless brought her record to two wins and a second in her three starts since being trained by N. L. Berkett when she won impressively after leading all the way in the Ellesmere Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Birthstone, Ipso Facto, and Wee Logan broke at the start. Landlight, a visitor from Southland, lost his chance when he was checked by a breaking horse in the first furlong. When the field settled down Artless was leading from True Comrade, Peter’s Pal, Tactician, and Kopara Lass. Sandy Ridge made a fast run with more than a mile to kgo, but he broke and lost his chance. Double Deck had to be pulled up when he struck trouble at the entrance to the back straight. After leading with four furlongs to go from Tactician, Kopara Lass, Desert Flight, Locknit, Scotch Drift, Emblazon, and Curiosity, Artless carried on to win comfortably from Tactician. Then came Curiosity and Hemisphere, which might have finished closer to Artless with better luck in the running. A daughter of Nelson Derby and Kilrea, Artless should soon win again for Messrs White Bros. A Thrilling Finish Dame Durdin, a well-bred daughter of Quite Sure and Dajne Fortune, stuck to her gait in fine style under pressure to beat Bashaw by a nose in a photo-finish for the Addington Handicap. Sure Jinks was the quickest to begin, but Rowan McCoy, which began quickly from the 36 yards mark, was the leader at the end of the first three furlongs. Roderick Dhu joined Rowan McCoy in the lead, and with six furlongs to go these two were followed by High Stakes, Young Neen, Encircle. Dame Durdin, Bashaw, Ivondale, and Scots Fusilier. Rowan McCoy weakened approaching the entrance to the straight. Roderick Dhu was clear with a furlong to go, but he was feiling the strain, and he broke in the last 50 yards. In an exciting finish Dame Durdin beat Bashaw, with Young Neen close up third. Trained at Otautau Tutta Bella gave the Southland trainer, D. Todd, his first winning drive at Addington when she stayed on well to beat Air Mail by a head in the Fendalton Handicap. Peggydale, Te Arawhata, and Uranium were the slowest to begin. Peggydale soon made up her lost ground to follow Keymaster at the end of half a mile. With six furlongs to go these two were followed by Super Globe, Scottish Brogue, Tutta Bella, Air Mail, Bay. Machine, Josedale Audubon, Victory Song, Constellation, Carisbrook, Victory Dale, Aqua Lady, Uranium, Fanciful, Lady Mavourneen. Fan Tan, and Hilda Scott. After taking the lead with three furlongs to go, Tutta Bella finished resolutely to win in a photo-finish from Air Mail. Peggydale did well to finish third, and then came Fanciful, which sustained a strong run over the concluding stages. Tutta Bella, which appears to be lighter in condition than when she was trained at Addington earlier in the season, should prove capable of winning in much better company.
