CANTERBURY PARK CLUB

TROTTING

Parawa Derby Wins Winter Handicap

FINE PERFORMANCE BY VIVANTI

A brilliant performance by a splendid two-year-old in Vivanti to win the Juvenile Handicap, an easy win by Parawa Derby in the Winter Handicap, a sterling effort by the three-year-old Van Dieman to win when racing against older horses in the Peninsula Handicap, Two Step’s solid display of trotting in the Second Hambletonian Handicap, and Dragoman’s dashing effort to win the Final Handicap were the highlights of the racing at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. The weather was fine, the track was in excellent order, and there was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £108,279 10s, including £9368 on the doubles totalisator, compared with £100,559 on the corresponding day last’year. The winning double, Parawa Derby-Artless, returned £2O 5s for each £1 invested. Of the 18,736 tickets sold, 3954 were invested on Parawa Derby, the winner of the first leg, the Winter Handicap. Seven hundred and sixty-nine tickets were redeemed on Artless, the winner of the second leg, the Ellesmere Handicap. Ten tickets sold on Parawa Derby were not redeemed. Although big fields paraded throughout the day, there were no serious accidents, and the racing was of a high standard.

Paraded in splendid order, and expertly handled by her trainer, C. C. Devine, Vivanti decisively established her claim to be rated the best two-year-old of the season when she outclassed the field over the concluding stages of the Juvenile Handicap, winning with something in reserve in the record time of 2min 41 l-ssec. The previous record for two-year-olds for a mile and a quarter was held by Young Charles, which registered 2min 43 3-ssec in the Juvenile Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s last winter meeting. The crowd was quick to appreciate the merit of Vivanti’s performance, and she received a well-deserved ovation when she returned to the birdcage.

Red Sable, Flagship, and Lady Balfour were the slowest to begin. Dealer’s Choice accelerated quickly, and when the field settled down she was leading from Taradale, Safeguard, Kapeen, Adorian. Flying Pilot, Dual Flight, Wyvern, Bleu Pietro, Highland Light, Vivanti, Johnny Globe, and Alouette.

Except that Adorian improved his position, the order remained much the same for more than six fin longs. Dealer’s Choice, which had set a fast pace, was first into the straight for the sprint l home, with Adorian. Safeguard, Tara-\ dale, Dual Flight, Kapeen, and Vivanti following. Once allowed to do her best, Vivanti soon took command, and pacing straight and true, she carried on to win comfortably from Adorian with the favourite, Kapeen, another length away. A racy-looking filly. Vivanti, which bears the stamp of her sire. Bronze Eagle, has gained three wins and a second in her four starts this season for Mr W. L. Parkinson, who bought her from Devine before she raced. On Saturday’s display, Vivanti should not be troubled to win the New Zealand Sapling Stakes on the second day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting on June 5. Adorian. a stoutly-bred son of Springfield Globe and Coquette, pleased by his effort to finish second./ He should eventually develop into a I good performer for F. G. Holmes. Kapcen’s effort to finish third after not being favoured by the luck in the running was impressive. He should soon add to his record.

A High-class Colt Most trainers would be well satisfied to have one horse o/ the calibre of Vivanti in the stable, but Devine is doubly fortunate, as he is also the trainer of the ; high'-class three-year-old colt, Van Die- ■ man, which he races on lease. Van Dieman, which had shown his best form earlier in the season when he beat i Burns Night and Te Maru in the Charles i Cross Stakes at the Canterbury Park I Trotting Club’s meeting on January 2, and when he heat Preston in the New Zealand Pacing Stakes at th® Easter meeting at Addington, gave an outstanding performance to win the Peninsula Handicap in 4min 19 3-ssec. The record for three-year-olds for two miles is held by Snowflake, which registered 4min 18sec, in 1948. Te Maru, Secundus. Grey Streak, Wrackdale, and Worthy Chum all lost ground at the start. Van Dieman was the first to show out. but Devine steadied him and allowed Grey Streak and Te Maru. which showed much speed to make up lost ground, to pass him. At the end of half a mile these three were followed by Piccolo, Tekau, Officious, Shy Sonoma. Velvet Brown. Mischief, Mountain Tarn. Eileen Lillian, Best Globe, Native Royal. Mvstery Dillon, Final Return, and Morano. With the leaders seting a fast pace, the order did not change much over the first mile and a half. Realm Again made a fast run in the back straight to be handy to Te Maru and Piccolo, with two furlongs to go, but he could not sustain his effort. Once straightened up for the sprint home. Van Dieman soon overliaiiied the leaders, and he stayed on well to win by two lengths from Piccolo, which was handily placed all the way. A handsome U Scott colt. Van Dieman will be at a short price in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. An Easy Win The consistent Dillon Hall gelding, Parawa Derby, gained, a popular win for Mr T. L Padgct when he finished five lengths clear of Bonny Scott in the Winter Handicap. British Machine and Bonny Scott broke at the start. Copper Trail began quickly to lead at the end of the first furlong from Parawa Derby, Make Believe Right Royal. Nebula. Systematic, which lost his position when he broke, Good Review, and Bonny Scott. A. J. Motz gradually improved his position with Nebula, which took the lead with seven furlongs to go. At this stage, she was followed by Parawa Derby, Copper Trail. Right Royal, and Systematic. A. F. C. Rushton sent Bonny Scott after th® leaders with three furlongs to go and she dashed up to join Nebula approaching the entrance to the straight, where Parawa Derby. Good Review, Systematic, Prince Hall. Right Royal, and Maida Dillon were the most prominent of the others. Bonny Scott finished on well, but she was no match for Parawa Derby, which won effortlessly. Dragoman Wins Sprint Paraded in the sprint, the Final Handicap, m which he was bracketed with Lady Averil, Parawa Derby appeared as the likely winner with 25 yards to go, but he was beaten in a photo-finish by Dragoman. which was well handled by H. I. Herbert, who trains him at Waimate. Congo Song began quickly, but he surrendered the role of pacemaker to Gantree at the end of three furlongs. With six furlongs to go, Gantree was leading from Congo Song, Islaburn Lass, Trustee, Parawa Derby, Gay Knight. Dragoman, Lady Averil, Prince Hall, Right Royal, .ay Machine, and British 1 Machine. The last two named broke at the start. Parawa Derby lost his position when he broke with a round to go, but he settled down quickly. Gantree was first into the straight from Islaburn Lass, Parawa Derby, Congo Song, Gay Knight, and Dragoman. In an exciting finish. Dragoman beat Parawa Derby by a neck. Another length and a half away came Prince Hall, which beat Gay Knight in a photo-finish. Th®n came Trustee, Gantree, Congo Song, and Islaburn Lass.

Two Step’s Splendid Effort Mr E. W. Farrier’s promising four-year-old trotter, Two Step, brought his record to four wins and six minor placings in his 13 starts this season when he won the Second Hambletonian Handicap in the exceptionally fast time of 3min 30 3-ssec. which is only three-fifths of a second slower than Jimmy Dillon's winning record for the distance. Two Step was paraded in sparkling order by C. H. Fairman, who deserves much credit for developing h'im into a fine performer. Lady Inchcape paced at the start, and s he was in a hopeless position when she settled down to trot. Roderick Dhu, Billv McElwyn, Daredevil. Bessie Grattan, and Merry Man all lost ground at the start. Little Jean was the first out, but she was soon passed by Mamanuas. Signal Light and Two Step both began quickly from the 48 yards mark, and they were soofi handy to Mamanuas. Signal Light took the lead with more than six furlongs to go, but he could not hol,d his position when the pressure was applied, and he was passed by Two Step and Daredevil with more than two furlongs to go. Daredevil appeared likely to catch Two Step half-way down the straight, but he broke Hampton then sent Signal Light after Two

Step, but he broke under pressure, leaving Two Step to win by a length. On this display, Two Step appears destined to win in the best classes. The form shown on Saturday should be a good guide for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Results:— ADDINGTON HANDICAP. Of £5OO. Trotters. 3min 55sec class.
