PROPOSED MERGER OF INDUSTRIES
Britain Said To Want Direct Talks SCHUMAN PLAN FOR WEST EUROPE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. It is understood that the Britisn Government has sent the French Government a Note suggesting that France and Western Germany should begin direct discussions, with Britain as an observer, on the Schuman plan to pool the heavy industries of both nations. Britain's purpose in attending the discussions would be to decide whether to join in the merger. The “Daily Telegraph” says that Britain suggested this as the best way of promoting official, detailed discussions without loss of time. The British proposal also gives the formal approval of Britain, as an occupying Power in Germany, to negotiations on the plan. “The Times’’ says that one of the major questions for the British Government is whether decisions of the proposed international industrial authority would conflict with national planning for full employment.
