TUBERCULOSIS ASSOCIATION

INTEREST ON WEST COAST Mr J. R. Wylie, a member of the executive committee of the Tuberculosis Association, recently visited the West Coast with the object of interesting the residents of that area in the work of the association. “I found that hardly anyone on the West Coast had heard of our association and no one knew of its many activities to help •sufferers from tuberculosis,” said Mr Wylie at a meeting of the association’s executive, when he reported on his visit. “However,, now that they do know what we are doing, I am confident that we will get strong support from them.” Mr Wylie, who knows the West Coast well, visited the mining areas in the Buller district, and addressed a meeting of the central committee of the Miners’ Union at Millerton, where he was promised substantial financial help. He interviewed the Mayors of Westport, Greymouth, Brunnerton, and Runanga, the chairman of the Inangahua County Council, presidents of the Miners’ Union, the president of the Timber Workers’ Union and officials of other bodies, all of whom undertook to make the work of the Tuberculosis Association known in their district.

Mr Wylie said he was assured that any appeal for help for the association would have the support of such bodies as Rotary Clubs. Women's Institutes, and branches of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers.

The vice-president (Miss M. Enright). who presided, complimented Mr Wylie on his outstanding achievement and it was decided to send to all officials whom he had interviewed a report of the association’s work audits probable early expansion. It was reported that during the last month 16 patients had been admitted to the Cashmere Sanatorium and 17 discharged. The official visitors to the Sanatorium reported on visits paid to the Coronation Hosnital and to the Upper Sanatorium and said that small requests from the patients had been attended to. Many applications for help were received by the after care committee and in nearly all cases relief was granted. Preliminary arrangements were made for the annual meeting of the association to be held soon.
