OAKS STAKES AT EPSOM
FRENCH FILLY SCORES SURPRISE WIN (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 25. Mr Marcel Boussac’s Asmena won the Oaks Stakes for three-year-old fillies at Epsom to-day. Result:— OAKS STAKES, Of £lOO each, with £3OOO added; second to receive 10 per cent, and third 5 per cent, of the whole stake. One mile and a half. Mr M. Boussac’s filly ASMENA by Goya—Astronomic 9-0 A , W. R. Johnstone 1 Mr A. Lieux’s filly Plume II by Vatellor—Platteville 9-0 .. .. 2 Mr J. Musker’s filly Stella Polaris by Borealis—Campel 9-0 .. .. 3 Nineteen started. Length; length and a half. Time, 2min 42 2-ssec. Asmena, ridden by the Australian jockey, W. R. (“Togo”) Johnstone, scored a surprise success, as while on the way ■ to the starting post she seemed to be lame. She got away well and came with a brilliant burst of speed in the straight to score a clear-cut win. The King’s filly, Above Board, faded out after being prominent for the first half-mile.
