OCCUPATION OF JAPAN

Australian Troops To Withdraw STATEMENT BY MR MENZIES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 26. The Australian Government has decided to withdraw the British Commonwealth Occupation Force from Japan, according to an announcement by the Federal Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) to-day. Mr Menzies said that one reason for the withdrawal of the troops was that it would assist in the early and successful introduction of compulsory military training in Australia. Some time would elapse before the movement of men and stores commenced, and the whole operation would extend over a considerable period. The withdrawal would enable Australia’s defence strength to be built up and ultimately would place Australia in a better position to make a contribution to the common problem of defence, Mr Menzies said. The force, which was originally formed from contingents from the United Kingdom. Australia, New Zealand, and India, now comprised 2374 Australians.
