SUMNER TAXI LICENCE

APPEAL ALLOWED In March the Christchurch Metropolitan Licensing Authority declined to amend a taxi-cab licence, to operate from Sumner only, held by E. J. Tyler, to enable him to back-load passengers to Sumner after carrying passengers to Christchurch. This decision is overruled by the Transport Appeal Authority (Judge Archer). Judge Archer says that the reduction of dead running by arranging for back-loading wherever possible is a recognised principle of good taxi-cab operation, and provided an amendment could be worded to restrict the appellant to this additional right he coujd see no reason why the amendment should not have been granted. “It is also significant that the Christchurch Metropolitan Authority is about to grant a number of new licences, so that the very minor additional privileges sought by the appellant would not appear to be likely to endanger the prosperity of any other operator.” he added. Mr J. S. Haywood represented Tyler, and the respondents. Gold Band Taxis. Ltd.. Rink Taxis (1948>. Ltd., and Blue Star Taxis (Inc.), were represented by Mr R. A. Young.
