FURTHER RISE IN STERLING FUNDS The Reserve Bank returns for the week ended May 17 disclose a further improve- i inent of £1.627,000 in sterling funds. The I ratio of reserves to notes and other de- 1 | mana liabilities has risen to 41.472 per I | cent., against 40.759 for the previous week, l and 39.144 per cent, a fortnight ago. | The returns in detail, with tne previous ■ week's figures in parenthesis, 'are as fol- | lows:— I Liabilities.—General reserve fund, £1,500.000 (same); bank notes. £54,263.000 (£53,983.467): demand liabilities: State, £11.614,000 (£13.186.761); banks. £80.075.000 (£77.379.798); other demand liabilities, £922,000 (£877.329); liabilities in currencies other than New Zealand currency, £31.000 (£26.772); other liabilities, £5.176.000 (£5.160,045). Total: £(N.Z.) 153.581,000 (£152,109.172), Assets.—Gold, £4.171.000 (£4.153,624); sterling exchange (New Zealand currency), £56.773,000 (£55.146.391); subsidiary coin, £232.000 (£135,594); advances to State marketing organisations, £5,140.000 (£5,544.035); for other purposes, i £53.000.000 (same); other advances, J £5.279.000 (£5.276.685); investments, ! £27.658.142 (same); other assets, £1.329.000 i (£1.194,700).
