PROPOSED CEMENT WORKS
POWER TO BE MADE AVAILABLE From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON. May 24. The Prime Minister <Mr Holland* said to-night that a company, to be known as Modern Cement. Lid., was prepared to establish a cement worko at Cape Foulwind, near Westport, with a production capacity of 100.000 tons a year, provided it could be assured of supplies of electric power by the time the plant was erected. The present electrical system was inadequate to take care of the company’s requirements, but so desperate was the need for more cement and so high was the cost of augmenting supplies from overseas, that the Government had decided to take special steps to ensure that the required amount of power would be available on the erection of the works.»which was expected to take two years. Mr Holland said. The State Hydro-electric Department advised the Buller Power Board last month that it would be unable to supply power for the proposed works until the Roxburgh scheme was completed in 1956. The company had requested that power be available by 1952. The average load of the work's would be from 1500 to 2000 kilowatts with a maximum load of 2500 kilowatts.
