ECONOMIC AID TO ASIA
COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES CONFERENCE IN SYDNEY NEXT MONTH (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 1. The Australian Minister of External Abairs (Mr P. C. Spender) annoqnced in Port Moresby that the members of the British Commonwealth had agreed that the first meeting of the Consultative Committee on Economic aid to South-east Asia should be held in Sydney on May 15The committee was established at the Ceylon conference last January on proposals sponsored by Australia, New Zealand and Ceylon. The New Zealand delegation .at the conference in May would be led by the Minister of External Affairs - (Mr F. W. Doidge) and the United Kingdom delegation by the Paymaster-Gen-eral (Lord Macdonald). It was expected that other countries would also be represented oh a ministerial level. The Consultative Committee would discuss recommendations from the participating governments fpr means of providing economic aid and technical assistance to South and Asian areas. They would then consider the question of approaching governments outside the Commonwealth which are interested in tfle area with a view to enlisting their collaboration.
