PROMISING FORM AT MOTUKARARA

SMART YOUNG HORSES Some smart gallopers were produced in the Bradley Stakes at Motukarara on Saturday. Travesty, a long-striding Defaulter gelding, ranking as a brother to Detract, opened his winning career in the first division. It was his third appearance in a race for Mr H. D. Greenwood, for whom he is trained at Riccirton by K. Thomson. Travesty shows much scope for improvement and development, and he should soon add to his record. He is the second produce of the Ringmaster mare Trapeze, whose dam was the imported Merry Miss, a daughter of Son-in-Law and Merry Lassie. Royal Hoax, runner-up to Travesty, was galloping strongly over the last furlong and was only a neck from the winner. She appears to have more than average ability and should win a two-year-old race for Messrs A. Kyle and J. A. Cox. Royal Hoax is by the Sasanof Stud sire Booby Trap, which was represented by his first winner when Voiron won the second division of the Sapling Stakes at Woodville recently. Booby Trap’s oldest progeny are two-year-olds. Royal Hoax is from Warden’s Queen, dam also of Nisus, Old Pal, Golden, Begowned. Trencherman, and Regal Gold. Warden’s Quern is by Lord Warden from Differential, and traces to the imported mare Peradventure, ancestress of Da Vinci, Guesswork, Smoke Screen, Queen of Song, Veilmond, and other good winners.

Levant, the runner-up to the four-year-old Royal Saga, in the second division, carried overweight. The Bahershah filly has proved hard to handle, and needs a strong rider Levant is a two-year-old from Curry, a Bulandshar mare from Caen, by Arausio from Hoy, by Birkenhead from Links, by St. Andrew. Hoy won the Great Northern Oaks and had 13 foals, of which 11 were winners and one did not race. She was the dam of Anomaly (Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, and a sire), and Shirley (CJ.C. Great Easter Handicap) and grandam of Burra Sahib (Wellington Stakes). .Kinnoull, another member of this family, was a leading three-year-old of his year with successes in the C.J.C. and DJ.C. Champagne Stakes, and the Dunedin Guineas to his credit. He was unlucky to lose the New Zealand Derby. Other members of this family founded by Mountain Nymph were Thackeray (D.J.C. Champagne Stakes). Merrivonia, Magdala, Marco Bello, and tyfeadow Lark. Merrivonia won 10 races and was the granddam of Classform, winner of the New Zealand Cup, and her half-sister, Sweet Biscuit, which won the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie
