racing

MOTUKARARA FORM LIGHT-WEIGHT’S CHANCE AT TRENTHAM Flying Control galloped his way into consideration as a light-weight prospect for the Autumn Handicap at Trentham next Saturday when he easily won the Peninsula Handicap at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday The Beau Vite five-year-old ffad the race in safe keeping a long way from home, and he could have widened his winning margin if his jockey, D. J. Thistoll, had wished. Flying Control has 7-2 in the Autumn Handicap and, with Super Snipe he appeals most of those under 8-0. Flying Control is now rewarding his connexions for their patience with him during his unsuccessful four-year-old career, which was particularly disappointing after the good form he had shown when three. He returned to form this season by winning high-weights at the Oamaru and Kurow meetings early in January. His effort to win the mile Domett High-weight at the Kurow meeting in lmin 39 3-ssec when weighted with 11-o was particularly g °The Beau Vite gelding next appeared at Trentham, where in his first appearance he finished at the tail of the field af + er covering a lot of extra ground. In his next race at the meeting, the January Handicap, he fared better in the running and Gay Gordon had to work hard to heat him into second place. His last appearance at the meeting was in the Thomdon Handicap in which he made up ground to finish sixth. He next appeared in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton last month, finishing third behind Trench Fray and Fine Hight. On breeding. Flying Control should be richly endowed with stamina. -By Beau Vite, one of New Zealand’s most brilliant Stayers in recent years, he is from the Foxbridge mare, Fox Tower, whose dam Hunting Tower, was by Hunting Song. JTying Control belongs to the Manto Samily, which has produced some great winners in Australia, including Nightjnarch. Accession, Beauford, High Caste and many others. Hot a Good Trial

Frances ran her best race of the season .to finish second to Flying Control on Saturday, but it was not an encouraging trial ifor the stronger test she will face if taken To Trentham to contest the Autumn Handicap next Saturday. The Bulandshar mare secured a ■ charmed run in behind Romantic and FlyIlng Control, but when the pace was increased racing to the straight, she could not foot it with Flying Control. Two or three years ago Frances would probably :have been little troubled to win such a race, but her effort on Saturdav left the impression that this grand mare is on the ! decline.

Personality was doing his best work .ever the last furlong, and his challenge all but carried him into second place It . was a pleasing improvement in his form as the Bulandshar gelding’s earlier summer efforts had fallen short of his best He will not race at Trentham but, if he' continues to improve, his trainer, L. J Ellis, should be able to place him to advantage at autumn meetings. Balkis was well back in the field in the early and middle stages on Saturday, but that is characteristic of the Sir Beau mare. She made up a lot of around over the last three furlongs to finish fourth, but she was still two lengths behind Personality and over six lengths •behind Flying Control at the finish.
