TRIAL OF PRIESTS IN JUGOSLAVIA
TORTURE SAID TO HAVE BEEN APPLIED WASHINGTON, March 5. Jugoslav Communists had tortured a Roman Catholic priest by forcing electrified wires down his throat, it was alleged yesterday at the National Catholic Welfare Conference. The conference had received word of a trial at Cetinje, capital of Montenegro. This sought to prove that “priests were plotting armed rebellion against the Tito regime.” Father Vittoria Kolocjra, it was said, had thrown the People’s Court into confusion by describing how his gaolers thrust wires down his throat and then shot an electric current through them in efforts to force a confession.
He was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. Another priest was condemned to death.
