WORK DELAYED IN DUNEDIN

CONTRACTOR UNABLE TO TAKE EQUIPMENT TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT CRITICISED (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 6. The start of work on the Albert street extension, one of the largest undertaken in Dunedin, is held up at present and the contractors, McJorrow Brothers, of Ashburton, are unable to say when they will begin work. They had hoped early last week to be on the job by to-day, but Mr R. E. McJorrow said this morning that the Government Transport Department haa adopted an unreasonable attitude and would not allow him to bring his equipment to Dunedin by road. “But we will not take ‘No’ for an answer.” He added: “We are using exactly the same sort of equipment as the Ministry of Works, but because we are not the Ministry we are not allowed to use the roads.” Mr McJorrow said that the equipment was over-gauge and could not be transported by rail. He had special transporter trucks, such as were used by the Ministry of Works, but as the Transport Department refused to allow him the use of the roads, these trucks were lying idle and the job was held up. “We are only asking for permission to do what the Ministry of Works and the Army do all the time,” Mr McJorrow added.
