N.Z. NAVAL SQUADRON RETURNS

AUSTRALIAN EXERCISES

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. November 24. The cruiser Bellona and four frigates of the New Zealand Squadron returned to Auckland to-day after six weeks in Australian waters on manoeuvres with the Royal Australian Navy. The squadron was under the command of Captain j. H. RuckKeene, D.S.C., R.N., in the Bellona. The accompanying ships were the Taupo, Kaniere, Pukaki, and Rotoiti. The Tutira was detached from the squadron during the passage from Hobart to proceed to Wellingtoh and Campbell Island. Officers of every New Zealand ship praised the Australian exercises for their value not only in fleet training but in rehearsing the two Dominion navies for their joint role. They were said to have worked well together and the programme provided opportunities for peace-time operations that would be impracticable for either navy alone. In their complementary role they proved a well-balanced unit.
