REMODELLING OF MUSEUM

Architectural Competition

WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The winners of the architectural competition for the remodelling and extension of the Canterbury Museum, originally estimated to cost about £lBO,OOO, are Messrs Miller, White, and Dunn, of Dunedin. Second prize has been awarded to Messrs Glimmer and Ford and partners, of Auckland. The following were highly commended: Messrs Helmore and Cottenll, with whom was associated Mr R. S. D. Harman (Christchurch); the Structon Group (Wellington); and Mr L. E. Brooker (Wellington). There were four entries from Christchurch. The .decision was made by the assessor (Mr Horace L. Massey), of Auckland, assisted by the director of the Canterbury . Museum (Mr Roger Duff), after two and a half days’ inspection of the 10 entries, and was announced at a special meeting of the Museum Trust Board yesterday. The first prize is £5OO, the second £250, and £l5O will be awarded to each of the entrants who were highly commended. The drawings of all the entries will be placed on exhibition in the museum before the end of the year. The standard of the entries was so good and so even that it was extremely difficult to sdrt out even the first five, Mr Duff said. In the winning design the public entrance is retained through the present entrance porch. Offices, library, and the Rhodes Stamp Colle tion all form a continuation of the'” ground floor of the south wing, and make one complete block. A secondary entrance has been placed in the end of ie Rolleston avenue extension. Th\ opens directly on to the big lecture hall with supper annexe, clubroom or hobbies room, and schc'/f service room. This independent access enables this section to be used for night meetings without interfering with the rest of the building.
