APPOINTMENTS AT HOSPITAL
NEW DIRECTOR OF PATHOLOGY
Three senior medical appointments made by the North Canterbury Hospital Board have been confirmed by the Minister of Health (Miss M. B. Howard).
Dr. D. T. Stewart, at present assistant pathologist at the Christchurch Hospital, has been appointed to succeed Dr. A. B. Pearson as director of pathology when Dr. Pearson’s resignation takes effect at the end of this year.
Dr. Stewart, who graduated ,at the Otago Medical School in 1936, was appointed an assistant pathologist at the Christchurch Hospital in 1939. From March, 1940, until June, 1944, he served with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East as pathologist at No. 1 General Hospital. For six months he was officer commanding the 2nd New Zealand Field Blood Transfusion Unit. In 1944 Dr. Stewart was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship in neuropathology. but he did not take it up. When he returned to New Zealand Dr. Stewart resumed his employment with the board, and in 1945 and 1946 was senior assistant in the pathology department. During 1947 he spent hine months in Britain doing post-graduate study in pathology, including six months as New Zealand scholar at the Bland-Sutton Institute of Pathology, Middlesex Hospital, London, and six weeks at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford.
While in Britain he was elected a member of the Pathology Society of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1948 he passed the examination section of the degree of Doctor of Medicine in pathology (University of New Zealand). The other appointments, both of which are new, confirmed, were those of Dr. E. H. H. Taylor, at present a senior anaesthetist at the Chfristchurch Hospital, to be part-time director of anaesthesia; and of Dr. Elizabeth C. Brownlie, who is at present in Scotland, to be registrar of the Burwood Hospital. Dr. Brownlie is expected to arrive in New Zealand early next year.
