WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Burwood.—A demonstration on cake icing was given by Mrs Anderson at the monthly meeting of the Burwood Women’s Institute. Mrs Leverett presided. Letters from the institute’s link in England and from the sponsored child in France were read. An invitation for two members to attend the birthday celebrations of the Bryndwr Institute was accepted. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mrs Thompson, a former member of the institute, was passed. Competition winners for the month* were as follows: large bloom: Mrs Russell 1, Mrs Little 2. Mrs Partridge 3: small bloom: Mrs Partridge 1, Mrs Russell 2; spike: Mrs Partridge 1. Mrs Cusack 2. Mrs Russell 3: shortbread: Mrs Partridge 1, Mrs Taylor 2. Mrs Cusack 3: home-made frock: Mrs Cusack 1, Mrs Newton 2. A special prize for a hand-knitted frock was awarded to Mrs Partridge.

Sumner.—A demonstration on the repairing and reupholstering of a chair was given by Mrs Fenwick at a meeting of the Sumner Women's Institute.* The president (Mrs P. Mauger) presided. Mrs .McDonald was appointed delegate to attend the district federation meeting at Glentunnel. During the afternoon pupils of Mrs Harrison entertained with a play and elocutionary items. Those who took part were Misses Margaret Blaylock. Gwen Drury. Ruth Adcock, Jocelyn Bowman, and Master Peter Becker. Competition winners for the month were as follows: large bloom: Mrs Brocherie 1.
