LEGACIES IN BRITAIN
TRANSFER OVERSEAS RESTRICTED
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 4. Britain will restrict the transfer of legacies to residents in hard currency countries to the first £5OO of each bequest. the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Cripps) told the House of Commons to-day. The remainder will be paid to blocked accounts, he said. This would be done to reduce Britain’s gold and dollar outgoings.
French Steamer Damaged.— -A small French steamer, the Neo Hebridais, has battled back to Sydney against heavy seas after narrowly escaping disaster. When she reached port she was listing heavily and her steering gear was out of commission. After she left Sydney on Friday for Noumea heavy seas carried away part of her rudder and shifted most of her cargo to the port side. As the ship lay broadside on to a gale which swept the seas right over her, the men managed to repair the steering chain and bring the vessel under partial control.—Sydney, November 6.
