WESTERN UNION DEFENCE
“REMARKABLE PROGRESS” MADE LONDON, October 12. Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery said to-day that he was "very optimistic about the future of Western Union co-operation and integration.” Addressing the Royal United Services Institution. Field-Marshal Montgomery. who is chairman of the Western Union Commanders-in-Chief Committee. declared: "We have made remarkable progress—far beyond what would normally be considered possible in neace time. We have achieved results which 15 or 20 years ago would have appeared impossible to attain on this international basis.” The way operational procedure and equipment had been standardised was “significant.” He deprecated any tendency to lean on the United States, and added: "We must act first, and get on with the business, and our very good friends will rally to our support in their own good time.”
