NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
AWARD TO LORD BOYD ORR LONDON, October 12. Lord Boyd Orr. until recently director of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1949. The announcement was made by the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament. Sir John Boyd Orr, as he was then, became famous throughout the world after the Second World War for his work in helping to rehabilitate agriculture and food production. He was knighted in 1935 for his work in agricultural research, and he became a baron this year. Lord Boyd Orr said that the money accompanying the prize (£7814) would be used to promote peace. “The only important thing in the world to-day is to get the nations to co-operate,” be said. 25 Killed in Buenos Aires.— At least 25 were killed and 75 were injured in Buenos Aires last night when a suburban train crashed into a freight train. An oil tank car attached to the goods train exploded, spreading fire through the wreckage. Several cars of the passenger train overturned. The police reported that 25 bodies had been recovered. More are believed to be buried in the wreckage.—Buenos Aires, October 12.
