The finish was one of the most exciting in the 110 years’ history of the race. Strathspey resisted the late flying effort of the French-bred Coubrador to win by a head, with Blue Coral two lengths away, third. Then came a group of horses almost inseparable. Auckland Scratchings Scratchings yesterday for the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting on Saturday were:—Manukau Hurdles, North Wilts (12.15 p.m.); Spring Handicap, Peter Nelson (4.5 p.m.). Cairnwhin, which was balloted out of the SP (p n A ) Handicap ’ now r€turns to the field. North Canterbury R.C.
