IDENTIFICATION OF GRAIN

Sir, —In a recent quiz, in which the child-participants are delightfully clever and well-informed, one was astounded to find that these boys and girls, and I think the quizmaster also, aid not know the appearance of wheat, oats, and barley—this in a primary producing country. Take away those three grains from our production and where should we be? Should it not be a duty of our educational authorities to give some real interest in our means of livelihood? Many North Island children have never seen grain crops growing, probably South Island children also. The sad thing was that the next question, “What is meant by ballistics?” brought a response like a shot out of a gun. Sad commentary.— Yours, etc., October 10, 1949.

SPECTATORS HOOT RACEHORSE Sir,—ln “The Press” this morning you print an account of the Mitchelson Cup winner, Wonder Boy, and the owner being hooted by a section of the crowd. All I can sav is that those punters did not read' a papei that is published every Wednesday in Auckland. In the October 5 issue that paper stated: “Wonder Boy has freshened up nicely since racing at Avondale, where he won the Avondale Cup If the going is soft he should run prominently in the Mitchelson Cup on his home course.” If they had read the above, instead of hooting the owner and horse, they would have been lining up at the back of the totalisator waiting for the pay-out. Yours, etc., W. LEWIS. October 10, 1949.
