ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY
AWARDS FOR LAST QUARTER
Three bronze medallions, two framed certificates, and a letter of commendation were awarded by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand during the quarterly period ended on September 30. A medallion was awarded to Mr Alex Reid, who rescued four people who were in a boat which capsised on the Maketu bar, Bay of Plenty, on March 6. Mr Reid set out in a 14foot dinghy, in a rough sea, with a roll on the bar and the tide running out. He rescued the four men, all of whom were exhausted, and managed to get them aboard his dinghy, which was almost swamped. Bronze medallions were also awarded to Robert Alexander Jenkins, aged 15 years, and Dodi Edward Pukere for their efforts in saving a number of school children who got into difficulties when bathing at Opunake Beach on February 21. Jenkins rescued five children and then, in an exhaused condition, rescued Pukere who had previously rescued two children, and it is thought a third. Pukere had collapsed, and was unconscious when Jenkins brought him ashore. He recovered after artificial respiration had been applied. Framed certificates were awarded to Constable Donald Andrew Rowe, for gallantry in a boardinghouse fire, in Remuera road, Auckland, and Mr Haddyn James Herbert for rescuing two people who were trapped in a truck cab. after it had left the road and plunged under water near Pongaroa on September 2, 1948. A letter of commendation was awarded to Glenys Eyles, a young girl who rescued her companion from a swimming pool at Wataroa on January 21. She brought her companion to the shore in an exhausted condition after she had been seized with cramp.
