OBITUARY
CAPTAIN V. C. WHITEPARSONS The death occurred recently at Melbourne of Captain V. C. White-Par-sons, at the age of 82. Captain WhiteParsons was a member of a wellknown Christchurch family, and a cousin of the late Captain H. WhiteParsons, a well-known master in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company. and harbourmaster at Napier at lhe time of the Napier earthquake. Captain White-Parsons went to sea as an apprentice in one of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s sailing ships in the early ’Bo’s. Later he served as an officer in the company’s sailing ships and steamers and was promoted to the command of a ship shortly alter the turn of the century. Just before August. 1914. he was appointed to the passenger steamer Turakina. which he commanded until August, 1917. The ship was later torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat off Land’s End just after the 25th Reinforcements of the N.Z.E.F. had been disembarked at Plymouth. Captain White-Parsons was later in command of several other steamers until his retirement in 1925. During his 45 years’ service at sea, Captain White-Parsons was in the employ of the New Zealand Shipping Company.
