POPULATION OF AUSTRALIA
INCREASE OF 250,000 LIKELY THIS YEAR (Rec. 10 p.m.) CANBERRA. Oct. 12. The Minister of Immigration (Mr A. A. Calwell) said to-day in the Federal House of Representatives that this year Australia expected to receive 167.748 permanent new arrivals, while it was thought that permanent departures would number 19,562. With natural increase, the Australian population should increase by the unequalled figure of 250.000.
In the first six months of this year, Australia received more immigrants than any other British Dominion, and by the end of 1949 will have received more than Canada, South Africa and New Zealand combined.
