COUNCIL MEETS IN GENEVA
(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) GENEVA October 12. Major-General Frederick O. Galleg.han, head of the Australian MilitaryMission in Berlin, has been unanimously elected chairman of the general council of the International Refugee Organisation, says the Associated Press.
The 18-nation council has begun its fourth regular session, at which final plans for winding up the organisation are to be discussed. The organisation is to cease operations on June 30. 1950. but it is estimated that nearly 200.000 refugees will still be living in 1.R.0. camps in Germany, Austria, and Italy on that date.
This residue group—mainly elderly or otherwise handicapped persons and very large families—presents a major problem for the organisation.
