PEACOCK FOUNTAIN
Sir, —Thank you for permitting me to reply to the numerous correspondents who have written on the above subject. “Reply,” however, is hardly the correct word, since it implies opposition, whereas of a dozen or so correspondents only one has opposed the idea of preserving the fountain, and his letter was quite unconvincing. Obviously the removal of the fountain is unpopular and the City Council should take notice. The old landmark has already been dismantled, which was no doubt necessary, because of the siting of the Evcleyn Cousins Memorial in that particular place; but it is to be hoped that the council will do its best to undo the harm it has done by finding another prominent and fitting site for the fountain. A primary duty of any local authority is to study the’ wishes of the people who put it into office and whose property alone it deals with.—‘Yours, etc.. H. G. ROYDS. October 11, 1949. [This correspondence is now closed.— —Ed.. “The Press.”]
