CZECH NATIONALS IN AUSTRALIA
PASSPORTS CANCELLED (Rec 10 p.m.) CANBERRA. Oct. 12. The Commonwealth authorities are disturbed over the calling in and cancellation of passports held by Czechoslovak citizens in Australia. The official belief is that the move may indicate that pressure is being brought to bear on Czechs to return to their homeland, as happened recently to Australian Jugoslavs. The Federal Minister of Immigration (Mr A. A. Calwell) said that any Czech national living in Australia needed to have no fear about his right to remain. “Nothing the Czech Government or any official can do will be allowed to militate against the security or happiness of any nationals who desire to become Australian citizens,” said Mr Calwell. “We will not tolerate any interference with our right to say who shall remain in this country and with the conditions under which people will be admitted to our citizenship.” The Consulate for Czechoslovakia in New Zealand has been advised that all Czechoslovak citizens’ passports must be renewed by November 30, or .they will be cancelled. —(P.A.)
