BASIC RATE OF £l3OO FOR PROFESSORS SPECIAL “ AUGMENTATION FUND ” (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. October 14. A higher scale of salaries for professors, associate professors, and lecturers at university colleges and the two agricultural colleges has been approved by the Government. The sal- ; aries of teachers in schools of medicine j and dentistry are not at present alt- I ered. The new scale, which takes effect j from April 1. 1949, provides basic i salaries of £l3OO for professors. £llOO for associate professors, and £BOO, ris- , ing to £9OO. for senior lecturers. Cer- I tain heads of departments in the col- j leges may receive an allowance of | £lOO over and above the salary they j receive as senior lecturers. The prin- . cipals of the two agricultural colleges will receive £1750. The Minister of Education (Mr T. , H. McCombs) said that provision had | also been made for the establishment < of a special fund out of which the j basic salaries of a limited number of j professors and senior lecturers might j be augmented by amounts of up to £3OO lor professors and £lOO for senior lecturers. This augmentation fund would be administered by a special committee set up by the Uni- j versify Grants Committee. All other university teachers and I certain members of the non-teaching ' staffs would receive increases like those recently given to teachers, up to £22 a year from July 1. 1948. and a further increase of up 1o £l3 a year I from June 1, 1949. This means that ; the rates for lecturers will now be i £660. rising to £760. and for junior ' lecturers. £460, rising to £560. The Minister said that the principle ‘ of augmentation, although not prov- I iously applied in New Zealand, was quite commonly applied in British uni- | versities. Its object was to reward | men of outstanding merit and to enable the colleges to retain their services.
