LAND SALES COURT
Sir,—How true are the w’ords of that old statesman, Mr Churchill, quoted in your paper this day: “I am all for a free market; a sham market can no more escape a black market than a man can escape his shadow.” How applicable that statement is to our Land Sales Court in New Zealand to-day. How sorry I was lor the chap in Auckland who had to refund his backhander of £650 last week. Evidently, the property was worth lha' price, and evidently the purchaser thought, so too. Our legislation is creating a community of law-break-ers. When the law is scrapped (the sooner the better) this purchaser has deprived this vendor of £650. Is this equitable? How can we buy houses, when under the above conditions no one will sell? —Yours, etc.. ROOMER. September 30. 1949.
