BANKS PENINSULA COUNTIES
MT. HERBERT COUNCIL’S EVIDENCE The evidence of county councils on Banks Peninsula to the Local Goveinm?nt Co . mission was concluded yesterday morning when the Mount Herbert County Council’s clerk and chairman were heard. The council’s attitude, it was stated, was against amalgamation, but the council considered the peninsula as a unit and desired one county council for the whole peninsula if amalgamation was to take place. The Akaroa County Council’s attitude at the Little River conference to discuss amalgamation having been a preference for the status quo, the Mount Herbert council had not been able to discuss any proposal tor amalgamation, said Mr C. G. Penlington. counsel for the Mount Herbert Council. The council had subsequently decided that it did not favour amalga*mation but. if amalgamation were decided on, it considered the whole of Banks Peninsula should constitute one county. The area of the county was approximately 66 square miles and the total capital value £553.240, said the county i'lerk, Mr Garnet Thomas Bullock, m reply to counsel assisting the commission (Mr J. S. Clendon), Mr Bullock sa.jc^i that the c'"...cil no difficulty in in Hie - 3l r,! ;!, >d by Mr D■ .' i I' a c Id ’ : ‘ T ”
