SUSPENSION OF RUGBY PLAYERS

Sir. —I was somewhat surprised and disappointed when I read of the decision of the Rugby Union about the ordering off of two senior players on a recent Saturday. Last year I was ordered off for striking a player and then arguing with a referee. My action earned me four weeks suspension; and although I do not object to this penalty, the present decision of the C.R.F.U. leaves me with the impression that Hs action savours of unfair discrimination. My infringement was at most no more offensive than the actions of these players, one of hem a representative player; and yet one week is considered sufficient penalty. When it is realised that by this action Canterbury will be able to field its usual five-eighths against Otago, it would seem that there is one law for representative players and another for the rest. —Yours, etc., J. B. LAGAN. August 29, 1949. [Replying to this letter the Canterbury Rugby Union says, “Each case is judged on its merits.”]
