DRIVERS’ UNION AND LABOUR

DISAFFILIATION MOTION DEFEATED (New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 7. A motion to disaffiliate from the Labour Party was defeated at a meeting of the Auckland Drivers’ Union on Tuesday evening by three votes. This was stated by the secretary of the union (Mr L. G. Matthews) to-day. He said there was not a large proportion of the union’s membership at the meeting, but it was regarded as a good attendance. Every effort had been made to publicise the meeting. “There was a long and healthy discussion, occupying the best part of an hour and a half,” said Mr Matthews. It had been decided not to proceed with another proposal that the union secede from the Federation of Labour, as there was no speaker present representing the federation, as was provided for in such cases. Another subject discussed at length had been the question of dirty cargoes, Mr Matthews said. There had been dissatisfaction with arrangements over the bulk wheat cargo of the Glenpark. including special payments, which it was stated had been promised but never made. Other types of cargo were also considered both dirty and injurious. The meeting unanimously adopted a resolution instructing officers of the union “to proceed on all direct claims made by members and to use every endeavour to achieve the just claimy'of the respective drivers.”
