MISS H. HULL

MEMORIAL TREE PLANTED As a memorial to Miss H. Hull, who was for many years principal of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association, and who died in Napier last month, six kindergarten teachers who trained under her, yesterday planted a scarlet oak tree in the grounds of Sunbeam Kindergarten. St. Albans. Beside the tree was. placed a copper plate, inscribed with Miss Hull’s name and the years—l9l2 to 1936—between which she worked in Christchurch. The six kindergarten teachers who took the principal part in the ceremony were Misses Frances Holland, Marjorie Suckling, Dorothy Willis, Orange, Hilda Jones, and Hazel Gorrie. Short addresses were given by Miss Suckling and Miss Willis, early trainees under Miss Hull, who spoke appreciatively of Miss Hull’s love of small children, her power of bringing out the best in all who came under her care, her loyalty and her belief that the second best in anything was not good enough. A tree, they thought was a fitting memorial to her for it would grow, develop, and expand as Miss Hull’s work for kindergartens had done in Christchurch.

Mrs A. Keith Hadfield (president of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association) and Miss R. Wilkie (principal) spoke warmly of the good influence Miss Hull had exerted on her students and through them, on the children that attended the kindergartens.

After the ceremony, Mrs C. D. W. L. Sheppard (convener of the committee of the Sunbeam Kindergarten) entertained all present at afternoon tea.
