RATIONING OF PETROL
AUSTRALIAN SCHEME UPSET
DECISION BY VICTORIAN COALITION
(Rec. 8 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Sept. 6,
Plans tor reimposing petrol rationing in Australia have been upset by a decision to-day by the Victorian Laberal-Country Party coalition against rationing, as previously in operation. The meeting favoured ‘‘orderly distribution by the petrol trade.”
All the other Australian States had agreed tentatively to permit the Commonwealth to reintroduce rationing for a limited period, but last week the Victorian Liberals postponed their decision, in spite of a recommendation by the State Premier (Mr T. T. Hollway) in favour of rationing. To-day, the Victorian Cabinet decided to recommend to the Liberal Party* that it had no alternative but to introduce legislation to ration petrol in the State "for equitable distribution until June 30. 1950. but in such a way as not to refer the powers to the Commonwealth.”
