MASSACRE AT MALMEDY

INQUIRY INTO TRIAL OF GERMANS

(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 5. The Munich correspondent of the Associated Press says that four Americans who helped to convict 73 S.S. troopers of the massacre of Americans at Malmedy admitted to-day that they had used mock trials and had tried to scare confessions from S.S. men. They denied brutality.

The fo. .• were before a sub-committee of the American Senate, which is investigating German charges of maltreatment.

The lives of six men may hinge on the outcome. These six are still under death sentence for their part in the killing of about 700 American prisoners of war at Malmedy, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. About 50 other Germans are serving terms of imprisonment. Senator Raymond Baldwin, who heads the sub-committee, said that the sub-committee would not alter sentences, but he suggested that the United States Secretary of the Army could do so if the evidence showed that convictions had been obtained improperly.
