EXTERMINATION OF WALLABIES
1800 DESTROYED IN A MONTH The campaign to exterminate wallabies will be continued for three more months by cullers now operating in the Hunters Hills, South Canterbury under the direction of Mr M. Kersnaw, field officer for the Wild Life branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. Although no official figures have been issued by the department, it is understood that approximately 1800 wallabies have been destroyed in the first month of the campaign, which began on June 7 one month earlier than last year. A large area of the Hunters Hills is being covered by the cullers, and will continue to be worked until the close of operations in September. Mr Kershaw said yfesterday the early start with the campaign would be appreciated by runholders, as by lambing time the lambing country would have been thoroughly covered. During the lambing season this country would be spelled, but snaring and poisoning operations would be carried out in the bush and scrubby gullies.
