RHODODENDRONS TO BE MOVED

A collection of rhododendrons, most of which are being obtained from other parts of the grounds, will be planted on an area overgrown with a mixture of native and exotic trees and shrubs along the southern walk of the Botanic Gardens, opposite the woodland. In its report to the Christchurch City Council last evening, the reserves committee said that the area had been cleared, apart from a few handsome specimen trees, which .had been retained.

“At the back of the rock garden, where the subsoil is mostly shingle, numbers of named varieties and species of rhododendrons had been planted,” continued the report. “In normal years these bushes were thriving reasonably well, but over the last two years the hot. dry summers have had a marked and detrimental effect on them. For this reason the bushes are now being moved to the site under preparation, where the soil is deeper and the conditions more congenial to their requirements.”
