LEGAL OFF-COURSE BETTING

Sir, —It is information that “For the Proposal” gives this morning that the totalisafcr is so moral it returns investments when winners are not backed; but the “skinning” process takes place all right, as nearly all bettors agree in their moments of reflection. Some unfortunates are “skinned” right to the bone in the sure and steady way that totalisators have of dealing with them. However, the referendum is not on the morals of the totalisator, but whether the people of this country want it kept on the racecourse, where it belongs, or see its offspring in the form of bettingshops “climb the fence” and find their way into our city streets, where they will undoubtedly do a great deal of harm.—Yours, etc., „ , L. R. BURGESS. February 28, 1949.
