LIQUOR POLL

Sir, —“Eugenist’s” argument is irrelevant. The question is closing times. No one will pretend alcohol is physically beneficial. I think, however, that its deleterious effect is greatly exaggerated when taken in reasonable moderation. The immoderates are in the minority. “Eugenist” seems to think that to enter a pub is to be a drunkard. Life cannot, however. be reduced to a scientific formula. Less intangible factors such as social conditions and human psychology have to be considered if a balanced view is to be obtained. There are many people who are forced to live uncongenial lives. A visit to the pub has saved many a square peg in a round hole. Nevertheless, longer hours could be supported on scientific evidence and police records in other countries. If “Eugenist” was prepared to learn and was honestly concerned with mitigating the harmful effects of drinking, he would support longer hours.—Yours, etc., D.V.D.
