FOOD NEEDS OF AUSTRALIA

“ MAY BE FORCED TO IMPORT ”

EXPECTED EXPANSION OF POPULATION

(Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 28. The expanding population would force Australia to import food unless primary production was increased, said the Minister of Commerce (Mr R. T. Pollard). He estimated that the population of Australia would reacn 10,000,000 within 20 years. He added that without adequate rural expansion imports of meat, potatoes and fruit might be necessary. The key to future food requirements was the breaking up of the large pastoral holdings, coupled with improved farming methods. The inability of some States to obtain sufficient suitable lands for soldier settlement, for which the Commonwealth had made funds available, made it imperative to resume the good country held by the big landholders and pastoral companies.
