“CONFESSIONS WORTHLESS AS EVIDENCE”
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON. Feb. 28. “The confessions at the trials of the Bulgarian pastors and Cardinal Mindszenty are worthless as evidence, and show only the inhuman ruthlessness of the men who extorted them,” says the “Daily Herald.” “A sinister feature of Communist trials since the Ramzin trial 18 years ago has been the standardised recantations of the accused. “Some means must have been employed to change staunch opponents into seemingly willing accessories. The u se of drugs cannot be excluded, but an explanation could be the use of psychological torture—denial of sleep, persistent questioning, threats, prouuses, and suggestions on weary minds and jaded nerves.”
