REFRIGERATORS

Sir,—The recent correspondence, including the reference to Coolgardie safes, appears to emphasise the fact that refrigerators have become a necessity, and also that the price of refrigerators in New Zealand is such as to place them beyond the reach of the bulk of the population. Your footnote to one letter in the correspondence appears to throw interesting light upon the matter. First, no allocation for importation for 1949; and second, customs duty from 30 to 62£ per cent. Surely neither the prohibition nor such high duty is necessary or even desirable in respect of an article so essential in New Zealand to health and comfort. —Yours, etc., HOUSEHOLDER. February 28, 1949.
