EWE FAIRS

Sir,—The Canterbury ewe fairs are about to start again. Farmers will be told ewes are going to be scarce again, and to get in while the going is good. So one farmer bids against the other, £2 for a four-year-old ewe being a mere trifle; but in two years’ 'time the same ewe, as a rape ewe, is only worth about 10s, and about 25s fat. It takes the difference to fatten her. The going is good; but if anything goes wrong the farmer blames the Government or the mortgagee. So farmers should use their heads this time, and there will be plenty of sheep to go round.—Yours, etc., v BITTEN. Winchmore, February 25, 1949.
