KAIKOURA CLUB

TROTTING

AQUA LADY WINS MAIN RACE

FABRIC SILK’S GOOD DISPLAY IN SPRINT

Paraded in. splendid condition by her owner, P- G- O’Reilly, who trains her at ? Highbank, Aqua Lady, which was P patiently handled by a promising young !, reinsman in G. M. O’Connor, brought her £ consistent record to two wins and eight £ minor placings in her 14 starts for the *? season when she finished strongly to win [ the Kaikoura Handicap in the fast time 1 of 4min 25 l-ssec from a 4min 43sec mark s at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting , at Rangiora on Saturday. } Regency, Gold Nip, Worthy Jack, and 1 Mavis Grattan all lost ground at the start, 1 Gallant Thorpe being the first to show out hom Tekau, Waroonga, and Risingholme. * The last-named soon took over the role 1 of pacemaker, and in turn he was sup- ' planted by Worthydale, which covered 1 some extra ground in order to take the £ lead. With a mile to go Worthydale was fol- f lowed by Risingholme, Gold Nip, Wa- 1 roonga, Tekau, Gallant Thorpe, Grand ’ Fleet, High Command, Great Wonder, and J Fabric Silk. Aqua Lady made a fast ‘ move in the back straight, and with three ( furlongs to go she was about 10 lengths I behind Worthy dale, which was clear of I High Command. Then came Risingholme and Fabric Silk. Worthydale was the ’ leader as the field straightened up for the ’ sprint home, but he weakened under 1 pressure, Aqua Lady passing him with a ‘ furlong to go and carrying on to win by - a head from Fabric Silk. By the Sandydale horse. Water Ranger, ’ which won races when trained by ’ O'Reilly, Aqua Lady is out of Maureen < Derby, which is by Nelson Derby from ' Moranne, a Rey de Oro mare which left a family of winners, including Frances ! Easton, Colin Waters, Mac’s Ace, and Agate. Aqua Lady, which has improved with racing and travelling experience, should 1 win again before the season closes. Fabric Silk Wins Sprint Sent out 2-2 in the betting, Fabric Silk confirmed the good impression he created by finishing second to Aqua Lady in the Kaikoura Handicap when he gave a polished display to win the sprint, the President’s Handicap, in the smart time of 2min 42sec. Kahurangi, which is now trained at Rakaia by R. H. Butterick, set the pace from the start, and when the field settled down she was followed by Typhonic, Grand Fleet, Shamus O’Brien, Killowen, Antrim Hall, and Worthy Chum. With six furlongs to go Fabric Silk moved up to sixth place, and he gradually improved his position to join Kahurangi m the lead approaching the entrance to the straight, where Active Service, Worthydale, Doris Grattan, and Mobile Globe were all prominent. Fabric Silk was clear with a furlong to go, but he had to be vigorously driven by W. R. Butt to hold off the fast-finish-ing Mobile Globe, which got to within a head of him. An improving pacer, Fabric Silk, which gained two wins, four seconds, and a fourth for Mr W. Prendeville earlier in the season, is by a winner in Royal Silk from Native Home, which left a fast pacer in Maori Home to Dillon Hall. Mobile Globe’s third in the Kaikoura Handicap and second in the President’s Handicap were good performances. A speedy son of Springfield Globe and Helen Ann, he should soon win a race for Mr J. Findlay, for whom he is trained at Tinwald bv C. M. Laine.

Loyal Scott Impressive Loyal Scott gained his sec3nd win for the season for Mr C. L. Rhodes when he outclassed the field in the Kekerangu * Handicap. Doreen Axworthy was the smartest to begin, but she soon surrendered the lead to Woolaway. When the field settled down they were followed by Loyal Scott, Kopara Lass, Fanciful, Ipso Facto, Springbok, King High, Gloxania, Kenyon, Sure Nut, and Sir Gamble. D. C. Watts took Loyal Scott into the lead witn four furlongs to go, and he was not extended to carry on and win by two lengths from Ipso Facto, which beat Sure Nut by half a length. Then came Fanciful, Doreen Axworthy, and Gloxania. A solid type of five-year-old gelding. Loyal Scott, which was bought some months ago by Mr Rhodes from Mr J. R. McKenzie, appears to have a bright future. In an attempt to combat the dust nuisance the track was heavily watered on Friday night and Saturday morning, and it was not until late in the day that the dust became troublesome. The weather was fine, and a large crowd invested £43,695 10s, compared with £32,203 on the corresponding day last year. The meeting was allowed to drift behind schedule, the last race being run about half an hour after the advertised time.
